Newbies to the world of internet marketing often get confused by all the jargon and terms used. We have put together an easy to read Internet marketing  which explains all the jargon and terms to help you become an expert internet marketer.

Internet Marketing  -  A to D

Ad Click Through Rate – The number of times that a user will click on an advertisement banner displayed on a website.  Usually mentioned in daily terms but can also be used monthly.

Ad Groups – Within each campaign, you can have a number of different advertisements relating to different keywords or potential viewers.

Ad Group Bid – This refers to using platforms such as Google text ads. The group bid is the maximum amount that you will pay for each advertisement within that group.

Ad Views – The number of times that your advert is seen by users on the internet. These results are typically shown in advertising campaigns such as Google banners.

Advertising Network – A company that allows you to sign up for an account and display your website or product amongst publishers belonging to that network.

Affiliate Marketing – The process of selling someone else’s products in return for a commission.

Alexa Rating – A rough guide to how popular a website is, in terms of visitors and inbound links. The lower the Alexa rating, the more popular the site is.

Anchor Text – An anchor text is used to link from one web page to another in a way to is enticing to the reader.  Traditionally the anchor text will be based on keywords that you are targeting within the search engines.

Analytics – These results will contain details about your website. How many visitors viewed each page, the popular content, browsers used and the location of your readers, are just a few of the many results that are displayed. These results help you to implement campaigns to achieve your goals.

Article Marketing – This involves publishing articles on various sites with links back to a targeted web page. Article marketing can assist with traffic or link building for a targeted keyword.

Business to Business – Sometimes known as B2B, these refers to a business models which concentrates on selling to other businesses rather than direct to a consumer. It is similar to the term of a wholesaler.

Business to Consumer – Sometimes known as B2C, this refers to a business model in which your target purchasers are people who will be directly using the product themselves.

Backlinks – The links from external sources that refer back to your website or targeted pages. Building good quality backlinks is of importance in the eyes of the search engines.

Banner Advertisement – Rather than an advertisement with text, a banner advertisement will display a picture with a single headline. There are various set sizes of standard banner advertisements.

Beta – When a product is in the Beta version, this means it is still in the process of being tested and revised. Very often software producers will give away free version of a product that is in the Beta stage, in return for the user reporting back on bugs and how user friendly the product is.

Black Hat SEO – This refers to methods used in website promotion which are considered unethical by the search engines.

Bounce Rate – This term refers to the number of viewers that left a web site without completing any further action i.e. viewed one page and no other.

Campaign – For each product you are marketing, it is essential to have a campaign detailing your advertising budgeting, your target market, what actions are to be completed and how you will measure your success.

Click-Through Rate – Advertisements are measured by a click through rate. If you had 100 visitors to your site in a day and 10 of those click on a banner advertisement, the click through rate would be 10%.

Conversion Rate – This refers to the amount of clicks that resulted in a sale.

Cookie – Many affiliate programs will store a user’s cookies on  their servers for a certain period of days. This means that if the user returns at a later date and purchases a product then it will still be credited to your account.

CPA – Used in affiliate marketing, this term refers to when payment is made dependent on the reader performing a certain action such as requesting a quote or signing up to a newsletter. CPA stands for Cost per Action.

CPC – This term refers to Cost per Click. Affiliate marketers are paid when a user clicks on an advert.

CPL – Payment is made on a Cost per Lead basis rather than click or action.

CPM – Refers to advertisement cost per thousand impressions. It does not matter whether the user clicks on the ad or not

CSS – Stands for cascading style sheet and it determines how a website is shown to a user. With little knowledge of CSS, it is possible to perform minor changes to the style and design of your website or blog.

Internet Marketing  – E to L

Email Marketing – This refers to a campaign which relays on gaining subscribers and sending them a number of targeted emails in order to complete a purchase. It is targeted at people who are unwilling to make a purchase straight away and also to gain repeat business.

EPC – This refers to how much you earned in relation to the number of clicks that you sent to that advertiser. The amount is determined by dividing the revenue by the number of clicks.

Geo Targeting – This refers to implementing a campaign which would relate to a certain geographical location. A local business would only prefer to target people in the areas that they operate while sites like E-bay will target all over the world.

Google Webmaster Tools – A function that is available with Google accounts and it will help with the indexing and crawling of your site.

Hit – Many new users of the internet confuse a hit with the popularity of their website however this is misleading as a hit refers to usage on the server. One page can accumulate a number of hits if there are a lot of graphic images or videos.

HTML is an abbreviation of Hypertext Markup Language. This is a coding language used to make up pages of a website.

Inbound Link – A link that is placed on an external website referring the user to the target website.

Keyword – Keywords are words that people type into a search engine to find the product or information that they want. Every internet marketer will be targeting certain keywords relating to their services or products in order to maximize their income.

Keyword tools – There are many keyword tools to help an internet marketer establish the competition for that keyword, the number of searches made and therefore whether that keyword will be profitable for them.

Link Building – Every internet marketer should have in place a link building campaign. This can be in the form of guest posts, reciprocal linking, web 2.0 blurbs or article marketing.

Internet Marketing  -  M to R

Mailing List – It is common practice within internet marketing to build up an email list. This will help you to notify subscribers of new products or information. It is also a useful way of gaining repeat business. Subscribers are gained by adding a box to the sidebar in a website or offering a free product in return for subscription.

Meta Tag – The description that you enter into the background of a webpage that will be displayed in search engine results, ideally the Meta tag description is keyword targeted.

Online Advertising – This is the process of advertising on the internet. One way to make money as an internet marketer is to sell advertisement placements on your website. Alternatively, you may also advertise on others people websites to gain business.

Online Reputation Management – In much the same way that a company will manage their reputation in the real world, internet marketers also need to manage their reputation online. For example recommending and selling a product that is not worthy can damage your reputation especially with the amount of user generated sites such as Facebook, Twitter or forums.

PPC – Known as Pay per Click, this is when an internet marketer will pay for advertising dependent on how many clicks are completed. The most popular PPC model is Google AdSense.

Pop Ups – This refers to when a web page is interrupted by a small box enticing the reader to complete an action. For example, the pop up could display a special discount or advertising a free book upon subscription.

Referrer – for companies that are operating affiliate schemes, they track referrers in order to ensure payment is made. Referring is made from one web page to another and is done in the form of cookies.

Internet Marketing  -  S to W

SEO – Search engine optimization. It is impossible to make money from internet marketing without outsourcing or learning the SEO tasks involved. The tasks can range from on-site optimization to link building to social media profiles. A certain amount of time each week should be put aside and dedicated to SEO techniques.

SERP – Search Engine Results Page – Internet marketers should be targeting certain keywords and tracking the placement of their site when a search is made with search engines for that keyword.

Social Media – Social media is now a heavy part of getting a website noticed. Social media refers to sites like Facebook, twitter, Flickr and Digg in which users generate and rate the content that is placed in front of them.

Title – This is the words that will appear at the top of a browser and also in search engine results. It is one of the first steps of on-site optimization and should contain targeted keywords.

Web 2.0 – Refers to sites which contain user generated content. Good and popular examples are Squidoo and Hub pages. Helpful in link building campaigns.
